The Web 2.0 Job Hunt: 5 Tips to Keep You Sane

Advice I’m taking, and passing on to you:

1. NARROW YOUR CHOICES.

  • It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the number of options, and it will be hard to accomplish anything if you hunt and peck.  Decide your criteria and job location before you start.

2. USE SMART KEYWORDS.

  • Use keywords that relate to specific skills or interests.  I found some really interesting jobs by searching for healthperforming arts, and green building in conjunction with the main keyword:marketing.

3) QUALITY OVER QUANTITY.

  • Don’t waste time and energy applying for every job you find.  In this economy, throwing your résumé on the pile is not enough to get you hired.  Instead, find positions that fulfill your needs and get excited about them.  Target your resume and cover letter.  Follow up.

4. MAKE A CONNECTION.

  • Find a contact within the company using Linked In, Google, or by searching within the company’s website.  Find out to whom to address your cover letter and find someone who will talk to you directly about the company.  Write emails.  Make phone calls.  Learn something.

5. PREPARE TO BE GOOGLED.

  • Search for yourself, and remove unwanted content.
  • Create a Google Profile with basic information you’d want an employer to see.  The “current employer” line will show up in a search, so use that space for something other than your current employer, like your website address.
  • Extend your résumé to the Internet by creating an online vitae or writing a blog.  You can use this space to showcase your work and your personality.  Reference your web address on your résumé or in a cover letter, and include it in your email signature.  There’s a good chance that if you give them a link to click, they’ll click it.
  • Take advantage of the listings that show up on a Google search.  My MySpace profile shows up on the first page and lists my MySpace name next to my full name.  I changed my MySpace name to my website address.
